Jokumaraswamy - Thu, 30th Nov'23

Dr. Chandrashekhar Kambar's Jokumaraswamy succeeds to identify various manifestations of patriarchy and its impact on the lives of women. In this play, Kambar, an outstanding playwright makes the women characters expose and oppose patriarchal oppression. In Jokumaraswamy, Gowda is the product of the patriarchal society which sustains conceptual framework that maintains structures of domination. He regards women and nature as irrational beings that are present to be dominated and exploited for the needs of man. Patriarchal society sustains false notions about men and keeps them blind to their real side. By the wisdom of ages, Shari and Ningi in Jokumaraswamy examine the weakness and hypocrisy of Gowda and stand testimony to the fact that women are wiser than men. Moreover, they scrutinize the patriarchal systems of domination that oppress women and reveal the false ideologies of patriarchy. Further, these women have strong concern for nature and claim its intrinsic value and inherent worth. By showing the representation of patriarchy in religious practices and the fashioning of gods, Kambar points out its pit-falls and calls for a new religion that acknowledges the contribution of women and by exposing the false centrality of man, Kambar discredits the illusion of superiority. Further, he shows the shortcomings of conceptual structures and places women at the centre of discussion. Thus, this paper tries to fulfill its purpose of feminist study that insists on the need for revolution in the 'social, sexual and economic structures' that exploit women.

Things I Know to be True - Sat, 2nd Dec'23

‘Things I Know to be True’ is the story of a family in which the parents perceive that they have done a perfect job in bringing up their four children who are now 'responsible mature adults'. Of course, none of this is true as each child is dealing with life-changing circumstances: some comic, some more serious. A play that everyone in the audience will identify with and laugh and cry with.

After Dark - Sun, 3rd Dec'23

A middle-aged man covers his mouth and whispers into a cell phone in the middle of a crowded metro. His tone is conspiratorial, punctuated by gentle laughter, and his eyes dance. Clearly, the person on the other end is not his wife. A young couple snuggles together near the compartment doors, and a sari-clad woman longingly looks at them from below her ghunghat. Perhaps this kind of PDA has never been a part of her reality and never will be. A young woman swiftly moves away from a young man who has been ogling her. The many stories that one witnesses in the Delhi metro – single trajectories, overlapping themes – are the starting point of this script. As the city morphs and grows, traditional laxman rekhas are questioned and a younger generation seems ready, willing, and excited to explore the entire spectrum of sensuality and sexuality. Desire, overt or covert, commitment or the lack of it, gratification of denial, ghosting or stalking – are all a part of our ‘relationship drama’ this evening. Old norms are challenged, new questions are raised, and boundaries are redefined.

Jugaari - Mon, 4th Dec'23

"Jugaari" sounds like an intriguing and socially relevant play directed by Arunlal in Kerala. It appears to be a socio-political commentary using humor and an experimental approach to shed light on the issues faced by the common people living in a riverbank village. The play's title, which means "Gamble," suggests that it revolves around the lives of the village residents who engage in mischievous or illegal activities to make a living.

Amma mattu Suhail - With English Subtitles - Tue, 5th Dec'23

Amma mattu Suhail is an ode to queer love. It is a meditation on the values of Empathy and dialogue as powerful agents to bring estranged minds together. The narrative traverses through moments of Passion, anger, sadness and love in its raw human element. The characters attempt to interrogate, understand and acknowledge each other and in this process unveil the universality of all emotions as being the same irrespective of gender and orientation. The play tries to deconstruct and lay open the psychological and emotional baggage of the characters who are but symbols of the divided humanity that we are today. An interfaith gay couple and A mother of one of the characters, venture on a journey of understanding one another rather light heartedly through uncomfortable conversations, only to explore depths which they never knew or imagined would be possible to unearth.

Wooden Block Play with Troy at BLR Creative Circus - Sat, 2nd Dec'23

Playing with Building Blocks is all about Play Architecture, how much richer this experience becomes for the little architects when the big architects are playing too. Build castles, defensive walls, and turrets that could be combined and recombined into different types of fortresses. The sense of Bigness and littleness - what architects call scale - is a particular attractive aspect of the building block play!
