Film & Theater
Parva - Thu, 19th Oct'23 - Sun, 22nd Oct'23
Parva is a take on the Mahabharata that is startling in its intellectual and emotional clarity. It is about the human effort, in thought and action, we make to resolve the conflicts that emerge from our obligation to the world we inhabit, to ourselves and others, without any divine intervention. It is epic, without the miracles. The form of the live performance is sacred. It requires the players to bring their stories to the audience, in shared time and shared space. The players perform an emotion, the audiences feel it. No AI can replace that engagement. Theatre will always rise up, from time to time, surviving as it always has, for thousands of years.
Tila - Fri, 20th Oct'23 - Sat, 21st Oct'23
Based on a German folk tale, the play is about a young trickster named Tila, who always thinks he is a grain of Til (sesame) cleverer than others. The play, using magical realism, reveals a series of witty, humorous episodes from his life. While making fun of other people around him, it is said that Tila also holds a mirror to the world. In Indian folklore, we have Birbal, Tenali, and Mullah Nasruddin. The production is a Ranga Shankara collaboration with Westflügel and is supported by the Goethe Institute and the International Koproduction Fund.

Fernando and his Grandmother - Sat, 21st Oct'23
Fernando and his Grandmother is a play based on the life of the well known Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa. An intriguing literary figure from the 20th century, Pessoa is called the “Endlessly Multiple” poet because of the many heteronyms that he invented. These heteronym figures were not merely pen names but whole fictional entities with individual biographies and distinctive styles of writing. Inventive and heartwarming, the play is based on the close relationship between Fernando and his grandmother. It presents the dark themes of mental illness, political censorship, and death with large brushstrokes of humour offering us a window into the unique and fascinating world of Pessoa and his many heteronyms.
Old Man and the Sea - Sun, 22nd Oct'23
This play is based on Ernest Hemingway’s novella. This is the story of an epic struggle between an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life. For 84 days he has returned home empty-handed. On the 85th day he sets out far beyond into the sea and drops his lines. At noon, a big fish, which he calls Mari takes the bait but the old man cannot pull it out. Instead, the fish begins to pull the boat. For five days the old man struggles with the fish, with sharks and with the sea, to survive and get back home.
Taledanda - Sun, 22nd Oct'23
Girish Karnad's play "Taledanda", directed by Shiva Honniganahalli, sheds light on the socio-political conflicts prevalent in contemporary Indian society. The play gains a broader significance by delving into the essence of revolution and the societal and political factors influencing its successes and failures. Furthermore, Basavanna's conviction that the revolution he initiated will eventually prevail is expressed in his belief that "One day this varnashram, religion, and caste system will all disappear". This sentiment also resonates with the revolution of Veerashaiva Sarana.
Sakal Jaani He Naath - Tue, 24th Oct'23
Men are Innocent. Or so they say while playing victim card, thereby alleging the Women Guilty of Charge! Sakal Jaani he Naath is a Comedy Folk Musical adapted from Vasant Deo and Sudama ke Chawal. It revisits the famed mythological fable about Lord Krishna and his childhood friend Sudama. A Tragic-Comedy that explores the narrative of the contemporary human situation and a satire on today’s man, his double standards and polluted mind. While the story and characters are the same, the ethos of these characters is what is seen today and in common life. The age-old tale and its characters have been used only as a reference. The play runs parallel with Narottam Das’s Sudamacharit and their verses are sung in folk tunes of Doha and Behre Tavil.
