Daklakatha Devikavya - Thu, 9th Nov'23
Daklakatha Devikavya is an experimental play drawing on the epic poetry and stories of the important Kannada writer and founder-member of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, K.B. Siddaiah. This experimental piece begins with a re- reading of a cosmogonic myth from a community that is oppressed even amongst the oppressed narrating the origins of the world and of life on it. The play progresses through weaving and unravelling untouchable rituals, beliefs, hunger and desires through song and storytelling. For untouchable communities nudi (speech, sound, voice, and word) is like breath that cannot be separated from the body. The play uses instruments such as the areye and tamte as vines of nudi that enmesh the narrative and sprout new directions from within. Thereby opening up the untouchable world as a world of deep sonic imprints. In a context such as this, the play confronts what happens when the 'written word' that has so far been unreachable collides with and becomes an organ of the untouchable body, giving rise to a new relationship of intimacy and struggle. The play provokes how the received insights through the experience of untouchability and the 'written word' force us to confront what it means to be human in the depths of our being.
Bhoomija presents Girish Karnad's Tughlaq - Fri, 10th Nov'23 & Sat, 11th Nov'23
Girish Karnad's Tughlaq is one of the greatest plays of Indian theater. This play, which revolves around an eccentric ruler in Indian history and the events of that time, can never be irrelevant. Political strategies, religious intrigues, religio-political conflicts and personal relationships are interlocked in the play. This presentation of the play is an attempt to bring it closer to contemporary times, to 2023, both inwardly and externally. Inwardly by examining Tughlaq’s personal turmoil and his relationships, and externally by bringing up contemporary events. It is an attempt to see Tughlaq as a common man rather than as a king, thereby understanding the present in both general and political contexts. At one end, there is the king, the king's stepmother, and his statesman, while at the other end, there is a swindler, a thief, some rich men, and priests. It is also an attempt to understand what impact the orders of the palace have on the population at large.
An Iliad - Fri, 10th Nov'23 - Sun, 12th Nov'23
A modern retelling of Homer's ancient tale of the Trojan War, accompanied by a live score. The timeless power of storytelling brings to life this gripping adaptation of Homer’s classic. A lone poet on an open stage throws us right into the midst of conflict where heroes and countries clash in a quest for power and glory. In this vibrant retelling, the Trojan War and present day are set side by side as ancient history is catapulted into an intense, intimate, and at times funny, story for today.

'Jugari Cross' is an effervescent saga of events that unfold in a single day. A romantic thriller set in a small town in the deep forests of the Western ghats, the story revolves around several happenings reflecting contemporary social life. How vanishing of rich timber trees and priceless forest resources, forests becoming a hub of black market linking drug and gambling mafia, and huge money generated controlling nation's politics and how gullible people becoming horrid victims in this spiral is the essence of the play. Cardamom farmer couple Suresha and Gowri who come to the market to sell their products unknowingly get caught in the sinister web of illegal trade. The play will take you from one dark event to another in its own inimitable style.

A Plant & A Tree - Sun, 12th Nov'23
The plant stands still, the Tree too. On the surface we see silent beings, often solitary. Come a little closer. There are sounds. Come even closer. There are entire worlds. Ee Gida, A Mara translates from Kannada to This Plant, That Tree. The play explores the two and magnifies the micro environments they house through movement, visuals and sound. For ages 2 to 3.5, the play runs for 25 minutes followed by an interaction with the performers. The play is largely non verbal, with sporadic use of Kannada, English and Hindi words.
