Roots - Fri, 29th Sep'23
Roots, a work in Bharatanatyam, is conceptualized and choreographed by Chitra Chandrasekhar Dasarathy and performed by Ameya Repertory from Bangalore. This work seeks to imagine a story of the Root where it is not just a place of return or of belonging but an entire assemblage pulsating with life, growth, ideas, thoughts, striving and much more. For the choreographer and the dancers, roots become a metaphor for who we are, how we engage with the world around us and what ways we find to struggle, survive and live with contentment. We draw, assimilate, internalize and spread the Sap of Life, just as the root does. The root is us, looking at ourselves.

Des - Sat, 30th Sep'23
The amount and speed at which information is available today is more than what our ordinary brains can handle. Such is the proliferation of information and misinformation from every perspective imaginable that it’s almost impossible to find out what the truth is. Goebbels would have had a field day in today’s world. He knew the power of information. How it could be used to play with people’s minds, alter lifestyles that they’ve been following for decades, make them question morals and institutions that have been sacred for centuries, and make it easy for them to turn on each other. Des by Abhishek Majumdar is a satirical take on today’s “post truth” India. Although it’s set on the eve of Independence, it deals with questions that are plaguing us as a nation today. What is freedom? What is a nation? Who does it belong to? How do you protect it? And what do you do when you have to choose between the imagined community that is the nation and the very real love you feel towards people in your immediate vicinity?
Mummy’s Dead, Long Live Mummy! - Sun, 1st Oct'23
“God couldn’t be everywhere, so he created mothers”. Of course, he could be everywhere, he’s God, he chose not to be because in his wisdom he knew that being a mother is the hardest job of them all. Anyone who tells you differently is either delegating, or lying, or lying about delegating. Often a mother is either pulling her own hair out in exhausted defeat, or being humiliated publicly by her mini spitting image. It’s not all bad. Sometimes, she can get seven whole minutes of the cuddly, loving child she’d always dreamed of. Aware that, in the space of half a minute it can go from extreme exhilarating fun to marvelous meltdowns. Mummy’s Dead, Long Live Mummy! dramatizes the relentless nature of motherhood by following the raw, unfiltered, tragically hilarious and often moving journey of four diverse mothers.

This colossal scientific achievement, the creation of the deadliest power in human history, was tragically transformed into a curse for Japan, where thousands perished in the flames. Science bore an indelible stain while the mighty grew mightier. Yet, amidst the overwhelming might, there stood a man who refused to yield. This unsung hero did whatever was necessary to thwart the madness of unchecked power. Branded a traitor, he worked tirelessly for the sake of future generations. The artists of this multi cast play belong to theatre group, Ashram Mandalee, bring to the performance their experience of multiple stage shows. The subtle understanding of those times and complex and uncertain situations demanded in-depth knowledge of both story and character. The effort and study reflect in the life-like portrayals, in their angst and convictions.
