Understanding Societal Systems

Ensuring Economic Growth - Sat, 5th Aug’23

India has ambitiously tasked itself to leap to the next level on the development ladder to a “developed India” tag by 2047. The country is categorised as an “Aspirational Society,” aiming to seize the opportunities provided by an economy that maintains steady and high economic growth. This society aspires for better living standards, including the bare necessities, better health care, education, clean water, sanitation facilities, affordable housing, electricity and the internet. The big tent of India’s social infrastructure must reach a diverse and expansive populace, transcending cultures, languages, and geographies, after all! The Government is thus making all efforts to live up to this challenge and demands of society, as economic growth without shared prosperity and well-being is devoid of meaning. A vast ground has been covered to ensure sustainable and equitable economic growth. However, the journey continues with fresh challenges and innovative solutions. This presentation by Chief Economic Adviser, V Anantha Nageswaran will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Cities in the World of Indian Stamps - Sat, 5th Aug’23

Placing urban India under a philatelic lens, this talk argues that post-colonial India has been ambivalent about its urban spaces. The philatelic archive suggests that the government did not share a vision for urban India. Within the stamps, cities feature as standalone iconic colonial and pre-colonial monuments and not as entities with a cultural and political life of their own. So nation-building through establishing ethnic iconographies for cities is the pre-eminent concern seen in stamps and not an independent appreciation of the specific virtues of work and life in cities. The talk concludes with a discussion on the implications of this stance toward cities reflected in the philatelic archive. Join at MAP for this illustrated talk by Vikas Kumar, as he delves into the idea of postcolonial cities of India through a philatelic lens.

Famous Last Words - Wed, 9th Aug’23

Ongoing vibrant discussions – many important ones of which have taken place under the aegis of the BIC – around the versatility, ability and limitations of AI include exciting showcasing of the powerful things that AI can facilitate vis-à-vis the arts. Dance and related performances, music and visual art have been at the forefront of what we have been exposed to. Ideas are exploding and creating a sense of new future ahead. In this session, the focus will draw back to that most fundamental means of human communication – the word. Many writers among us have played with, read about, and marvelled at the ability of AI to ‘read’ data and spew out essays, critical reviews, technical manuals with an ease and speed that make us – humans – the ‘worst in class’. What about creative writing? Can AI tell a story with a magic that can captivate, and lift our minds to soar into the unknown? In this panel with four practitioners who explore writing ranging from poetry, dialogue, narrative and more, will talk about their engagement with AI. We will learn how AI melts boundaries between story and medium, word and intention. Through the conversation, the audience will have a chance to exercise their imaginations to reflect on whether we, as a community, should delight in this new aid to our creative expression, or feel threatened that the very thing, in this context, that makes us human – our individual imaginations – may become obsolete?
