A Life in Poems - Sun, 13th Aug’23

Anandibai Joshee: A Life in Poems is a collection of poems written in the imagined voice of India’s first female medical doctor and the first Indian woman to come to the United States and study medicine in 1883. Anandibai Joshee’s life story (1865-1887) is a brief yet compelling one of struggle, empowerment, and allyship in the 19th century. The poems in Shikha Malaviya’s book are a chronological rendering of Anandibai’s life-from her birth and childhood in the bustling town of Kalyan in Maharashtra and her marriage to an eccentric man sixteen years older, to early childbirth and the loss of her infant, from which her desire to become a doctor was born. Drawing from extensive research and told in a variety of poetic forms-sonnet, epistolary, prose, pantoum, ghazal, ekphrastic, duplex, etc., the author captures and conveys Anandibai’s voice, culled from her life and letters. Anandibai Joshee: A Life in Poems isn’t just poetry, but biography and history as well. In this session, author Shikha Malaviya will be in conversation with Sohini Basak. A Q&A with the audience will follow.

Understanding Societal Systems

Do Wires Dream of Veins? - Sat, 12th Aug’23

AI is here and how- Chat GPT became the quickest tech company to 100 million active users in 2 months and millions of images are being created with text to image generation services daily! What does this all mean for art and creativity? Does art continue to be a human pursuit, or have we finally managed to ‘automate’ art? If AI can create any ultra-realistic looking image instantly on demand, where does this blurring boundary between truth and generated reality leave us? Are the datasets that power these AI models representative of our cultural diversities or are they funnelling us into whitewashed vaults? How do we navigate this post-truth, post-human era we find ourselves in? Can art be a medium to engage with these questions more critically and thus collectively shape the future of humanity? Artist Harshit Agrawal will explore these topics through this talk, sharing his work in the area of AI and art over the last decade.

Decisive Battles - Mon, 14th Aug’23

In 1984, amid escalating tensions at the border between India and Pakistan, the Indian Army raised the 28 Infantry Division in Ladakh, which was responsible for safeguarding the entire northern stretch of the Indian border, including the Line of Control with Pakistan and the Tibetan/Chinese area of the Karakoram Pass. Siachen, 1987: Battle for the Frozen Frontier tells the story of Lt Gen. Ramesh Kulkarni’s command of this infantry division, giving readers the rare opportunity to view the Siachen glacier and the army’s involvement in the region through the lens of a commander. Co-authors, Lt. Gen Kulkarni and Anjali Karpe discuss this memoir that gives a blow-by-blow account of the important combat operations during Kulkarni’s tenure – Operation Rajiv, in which the Quaid Post held by Pakistan was captured; and Operation Vajr Shakti, undertaken to thwart the Pakistani attempt to capture Bilafond La. Alongside thrilling descriptions of military prowess, the conversation will also speak to the human cost of the Siachen conflict: being expected to thrive in treacherous terrain and an environment that has claimed innumerable lives. Between a talk, a dialogue and some conversations, they promise to open the world of Siachen and the army’s involvement in a terrain that has been brutal, treacherous and demanding.
