Bhoomija Presents Girish Karnad’s Tughlaq - Fri, 30th Jun’23 & Sat, 1st Jul’23

Girish Karnad’s Tughlaq is one of the greatest plays of Indian theatre. This play, which revolves around an eccentric ruler in Indian history and the events of that time, can never be irrelevant. Political strategies, religious intrigues, religious-political conflicts, and personal relationships are interlocked in the play. This presentation of the play is an attempt to bring it closer to contemporary times, to 2023, both inwardly and externally, inwardly by examining Tughlaq’s personal turmoil, and his relationships, and externally by bringing up contemporary events. It is an attempt to see Tughlaq as an ordinary man rather than as a king, thereby understanding the present in both general and political contexts. At one end there is the king, the king’s stepmother, and his statesman, while at the other end, there is a swindler, a thief, some rich men, and priests. It is also an attempt to understand what impact the orders of the palace have on the population at large.

Chouboli - Sat, 1st Jul’23

Performed in the oral tradition of storytelling, this Hindi adaptation of a folktale (originally written in Rajasthani by Vijaydan Detha) is a funny, satirical take on complexities of human life in its myriad forms. It weaves timeless, lyrical riddles of ethical and philosophical dilemmas, and preferences, in a story within a story format.

No Strings Attached - Mon, 3rd Jul’23

The format of the show is written in the style of a contemporary vaudeville or variety entertainment show. The performance initially starts with the character Hasan, who engages the audience directly in conversation. This interaction initiates the human element of the piece until he is rudely interrupted by his artistic partner. It then descends into chaos as the two characters become a bickering couple. As No Strings Attached suggests, this is the beginning of the breakdown of the fabric of social values. An inability to stay connected with each other on a personal and communal level. We show three different periods of time to reflect those breakdowns. The present as mentioned, the past presents the loggerhead of two opposing cultures, and the piece finally declines into a dystopic future, one in which we view the potential of where Artificial Intelligence could lead us.

Fernando and His Grandmother - Wed, 5th Jul’23

This will be an introductory talk on Fernando Pessoa – poet, writer, literary critic, translator, publisher and philosopher. Latha Reddy has spent a total of nine years in Portugal, spread out over three decades, during her diplomatic career, and speaks Portuguese fluently. She will present a selection of Pessoa’s work which will illustrate his complex personality. This introduction will provide a meaningful prelude to the play “Fernando and his Grandmother “ which will follow the talk. Fernando and his Grandmother is a play based on the life of the well known Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa. Inventive and heartwarming, the play is based on the close relationship between Pessoa and his grandmother. It presents the dark themes of mental illness, political censorship and death, with large brushstrokes of humour, offering us a window into the unique and fascinating world of Pessoa and his many heteronyms.

Once you connect with yourself, your heart and mind will open to connect with others, too. Ruchika’s Play Factory, aims to bring people (Age 13 plus) together and connect back with their lost inner child; learn ways to keep that child alive to connect with others and life. Interconnected Tales - Sun, 2nd Jul’23

The stories that we create and share capture the wisdom of our lives and our environments. Over thousands of years, many stories and many different traditions of telling them have evolved and disappeared. One such 400-year-old tradition, on the brink of extinction today, is the Kaavad Katha from Rajasthan that brings together storytelling and visual craft to portray religious, mythological, social and contemporary narratives. Traditionally, the form uses a portable wooden box (also called a kaavad) that serves as a visual aid. Each box holds numerous stories that are brought to life by specialised storytellers. This month’s Stories at MAP series brings Interconnected Tales – a session that explores this unique storytelling tradition with theatre artist Akhshay Gandhi. Through this session, children get introduced to the fundamental principles of this rich tradition, the craft of story building, and its performative aspects. They also get to make and take back their own kaavads!
