The Beginning of the End of Design: Design at the End of the World - Sun, 25th Jun’23

The seductive allure of consumer culture has been made only possible through design; a formal, necessary, complementary role to its counterpart of functional. This has been design’s dominant mode, one whose collusion in the acceleration of capitalism, and consequently, the destructive impact of the anthropocene, cannot be denied. This talk will historcise design as a discipline in order to contextualise its potential future directions, paying particular attention to how these might play out in India, with its promise of what has been glibly described as “the next billion users.” Padmini Ray Murray will draw on lessons she has learnt from her experiences and thinking around Design Beku, a design justice and digital rights collective she founded in 2018, to suggest provocations and challenges to how we might perceive and define design at this critical and crucial moment, and explore the tension between a more capacious understanding of what design could be as opposed to doing away with it altogether.

On Imagination, Memory and the Future - Wed, 28th Jun’23

Philosophical debates over ‘Imagination’ and ‘Memory’ have been around for a long time. Thomas Hobbes demonised Imagination as an evil force in the 17th century. While two centuries later, Samuel Taylor Coleridge passionately defended Imagination, turning Memory into the arch villain in contexts of creative expression. Memory has been at the centre of major classics and masterpieces in the arts. Sigmund Freud highlighted its significance to the creative process. Yet, philosophers are not quite sure if Memory is a delusion; a make-belief gathering of things gone-past; or an innate cognitive mechanism gifted to man’s recursive brain. Is it a natural way of remembering things or an illusion? In this lecture, G. N. Devy will present these conflicting positions and comment on the place of memory in art, culture and politics. The lecture will draw upon the cultural and linguistic traditions of India as well as Europe to arrive at a formulation about the future of human memory.

Achalayatana - Fri, 23rd Jun’23

Rabindranath Tagore’s Achalayatan (1912) presents an arena of conflicting faiths. Built on a story of resistance to the naturalness of life, Mahapanchak’s ‘Achalayatan’, representing a quest of dry wisdom, turns into a petrified land of illusion and immobility. On the other hand, the Sonpangshus are work addicts to the extent that they mistake work for the end and not the means, while the Darvaks remain happy with their simple, unquestioning, selfless devotion. All three fail to realise that life is to be tasted in its totality. Knowledge, power to work, and devotion are to be assimilated to achieve the true version of life. And for that, the Guru’s help becomes imperative. In essence the play is a strong indictment of our ethico-religious and educational systems drained of all meaning and rendered bloodless, dry and sterile through over-emphasising rules for rules’ sake.

He is here to talk about life; his life, your life, the lives of a lot of middle class families and how we are entangled with the thoughts of the society and the people we live with.

Daklakatha Devikavya - Sat, 24th Jun’23

Daklakatha Devikavya is an experimental play drawing on the epic poetry and stories of the important Kannada writer and founder-member of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, K.B. Siddaiah. This experimental piece begins with a re- reading of a cosmogonic myth from a community that is oppressed even amongst the oppressed narrating the origins of the world and of life on it. The play progresses through weaving and unravelling untouchable rituals, beliefs, hunger and desires through song and storytelling. For untouchable communities nudi (speech, sound, voice, and word) is like breath that cannot be separated from the body. The play uses instruments such as the areye and tamte as vines of nudi that enmesh the narrative and sprout new directions from within. Thereby opening up the untouchable world as a world of deep sonic imprints. In a context such as this, the play confronts what happens when the ‘written word’ that has so far been unreachable collides with and becomes an organ of the untouchable body, giving rise to a new relationship of intimacy and struggle. The play provokes how the received insights through the experience of untouchability and the ‘written word’ force us to confront what it means to be human in the depths of our being.

The play tries to deconstruct and lay open the psychological and emotional baggage of the characters who are but symbols of the divided humanity that we are today. That Cloud Never Left - Wed, 28th Jun’23

In Daspara, a village 200 km outside of Calcutta, hundreds of toys are produced every day: rattles, whistles, windmills, all made by hand. The raw materials used are old strips of film, detritus from the archives of Bollywood. What matters isn’t so much the pictures that are used by the workers, but rather the material and the clicking sound that the strips of film make. As the villagers follow this routine with uninterrupted monotony, a few narratives leak out from the shredded analogues of film and infuse the place with phantasmagoria. After the screening, the director, Yashaswini Raghunandan and the Cinematographer, Paromita Dhar will be in conversation with Sunanda Bhat.
